Introducing kids to environmental education at a very young
age can make them more responsible towards their environment.
Environment education has been considered as an additional
or elective subject in traditional K-12 curriculum. At the
elementary school level, environmental education can take
the form of science enrichment curriculum, natural history
field trips, community service projects, and participation
in outdoor science schools. In secondary school, environment
education can be either a focused subject in the realm of
science subject or a part of student interest groups or clubs.
At the undergraduate and graduate levels, it can be considered
as an independent subject in the fields of education, environmental
studies, environmental science and policy, ecology, or human/cultural
ecology programmes.
In an endeavour to promote environmental education among
kids and young people, TERI has come out with an innovative
approach on environment education. Edugreen, a portal (www.edugreen.teri.res.in)
on environment awareness for young children and school students,
focuses on the various initiatives taken for school students
to sensitize them on the environment.
